Pharmacy Training Program Is Underway…

4th Wall Relief volunteer Christie Nielsen is heading up our pharmacy training program for medics and community health workers working in remote clinics inside Karen State, Burma. She comes to us with may years of Pharmacy experience in remote areas of Alaska and Washington State. Her skills are essential when designing a program for clinics where it often takes 1-2 weeks on foot to deliver medicine and equipment to a population constantly displaced by a 6 decade long ethnic conflict.

The goal of this training course is to teach proper transport, storage, and dispensation of medicines to patients and to provide these health workers with a solid scientific background on the many medicines they work with on a daily basis. Upon completion of this course teams of trainers will go into the field to these clinics and conduct this training themselves.

New Pharmacist Training Program to Begin in May…

Our latest project with KDHW is our newly launched Pharmacy Training Program. This project came out of a request by the Karen Department of Health and Welfare to have pharmacists come over to train KDHW medics to set up, operate, and maintain their camp and village based pharmacies inside Karen State. We are pleased to have Christy Nielson from Chelan, Washington on board to build the program and will be in Thailand in May to conduct the first of hopefully many training courses. Her experience working in remote, rural communities in Alaska, and Washington State make her an amazing addition to our team.

Developing Opportunity

We are pleased to announce our new partnership with Developing Opportunity (DO), a US based 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization dedicated to improving lives in developing countries by creating opportunity.

DO has agreed to act as our fiscal sponsor, this allows us to accept tax deductible charitable donations. They have also funded the Karen Department of Health and Welfare 2010 Community Health Worker Training. We are grateful to have them working with us.

Karen Training Programs
Currently 4th Wall Relief and its partner Developing Opportunity (DO) are funding the Karen Department of Health and Welfare 2010 Community Health Worker Training. Beginning in April 20-30 medics will begin an intensive 6 month training in malaria, vitamin deficiency, intestinal parasites, landmine injuries and other common illnesses.

4th Wall and DO support a number of training programs with local Karen Community-Based Organizations along the border. English, IT, office management, are taught by 4th Wall volunteers to advanced medics and support staff to help the KDHW operate its 35 mobile clinics and 200+ medics in Karen communities who have little or no access to healthcare otherwise.
